MISTERI - 2025
Wool
160 x 200 cm
The Misteri carpet marks Miguel Leiro's foray into the realm of carpet design, a culmination of his collaboration with the avant-garde Ukrainian company Basny Rugs. Handcrafted in the Carpathian Mountains using locally sourced wool, this design heralds a new phase in Miguel's research and design journey, inspired by ancient Rome.
The name 'MISTERI' pays tribute to the renowned Villa dei Misteri (Villa of the Mysteries) in Pompeii, a Roman villa celebrated for its famous frescoes, believed to depict the initiation of a bride into a mysterious cult.
The underlying concept of the carpet delves into the realm of meta-reference, evoking the Roman penchant for self-referential imagery in their sumptuous banquets. This carpet/tapestry evokes the hanging fabrics typical of tricliniums and furniture, perfectly aligning with the abstract and dynamic aesthetics of Basny Rugs. The design subtly and mysteriously addresses the self-referential nature inherent to architecture and design.
Intended to represent the deconstructed landscape of a classical triclinium, the carpet invites users to fully recline, immersed in the opulent ambiance of ancient Roman decadence.
Made in Ukraine, the Basny carpet is a classic textile piece, woven with sheep's wool. In the Hutsul region, this type of carpet is called lizhnyk and is used both in everyday life and ceremonial rituals. Basny's lizhnyk styles are handcrafted using traditional techniques involving more than ten stages. The process begins with the collection and processing of the wool and culminates in the final treatment of a finished object.
